History & Legend
The Legend of Soma
According to Hindu tradition, Soma (the Moon God) lost his brilliance due to a curse from Daksha Prajapati. After intense penance at Somnath, Lord Shiva partially lifted the curse, giving rise to the waxing and waning of the moon. In gratitude, Soma is believed to have built the first shrine here in gold.
Destruction and Rebirth
Somnath has been attacked and rebuilt multiple times — most notably during Mahmud of Ghazni’s raid in 1026 CE, and later under medieval invasions. The present structure, built in Chalukya architectural style, was inaugurated in 1951 following the vision of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
Each reconstruction reinforced Somnath’s status as India’s most enduring spiritual landmark.
