Murudeshwar Temple is located in Murudeshwar. It is one of Karnataka’s most dramatic spiritual landmarks. Perched on Kanduka Hill and surrounded by the Arabian Sea on three sides, this Shiva temple blends devotion with breathtaking coastal scenery.
Murudeshwar is globally famous for its 123-foot Lord Shiva statue (the second tallest in the world) and its towering 20-storey Raja Gopura rising about 249 feet. The temple is also counted among the Pancha Kshetras of Lord Shiva in Karnataka, making it both a pilgrimage site and a visual wonder.

History & Spiritual Legacy
The Atma Linga Legend
According to Ramayana lore, Ravana obtained the sacred Atma Linga from Lord Shiva after intense penance. On his journey back to Lanka, Lord Vishnu and Ganesha intervened, forcing Ravana to place the Linga on the ground at Gokarna. When Ravana tried to lift it again, parts of the divine energy scattered. Tradition says the cloth covering the Atma Linga fell at Murudeshwar, sanctifying this very spot.
Modern Transformation
The present grandeur of Murudeshwar is largely credited to the late R. N. Shetty, whose vision led to the construction of the colossal Shiva statue and the record-breaking Raja Gopura, turning this quiet coastal shrine into an international attraction.
