The temple was founded in the 13th century by the philosopher-saint Madhvacharya.
The Idol’s Origin
Legend says Madhvacharya rescued a stranded ship and discovered the Krishna idol hidden inside sacred clay (Gopichandana). The idol is believed to have been originally worshipped by Rukmini herself.
Architecture
The temple reflects traditional Coastal Karnataka design — sloping copper roofs, wooden pillars, open courtyards, and surrounding Mathas that form the famous Car Street. Massive wooden chariots are pulled here during festivals, creating one of Karnataka’s most vibrant spiritual spectacles.
