The sacred Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple, popularly called Alamelu Mangapuram, is located in Tiruchanur, about 5 km from Tirupati.
This temple is dedicated to Goddess Padmavathi (also known as Alamelu Manga), the divine consort of Lord Venkateswara. According to long-standing tradition, a Tirumala pilgrimage is considered incomplete without first seeking Padmavathi Ammavari’s blessings here.
The name Alamelu Mangapuram literally means “the town of the Goddess who appeared on a lotus.” Devotees believe the Goddess grants prosperity, marital harmony, and fulfillment of heartfelt prayers. Compared to Tirumala, Tiruchanur feels calmer, softer — deeply devotional without overwhelming crowds on normal days.

History & Divine Legend
The Goddess on the Lotus
According to legend, Goddess Lakshmi left Vaikuntha after Sage Bhrigu struck Lord Vishnu’s chest. She performed penance for 12 years near the Swarnamukhi River and finally emerged from a golden lotus on a Friday in the Kartheeka month — right at Tiruchanur.
Reunion with Lord Venkateswara
Lord Vishnu descended to Earth as Lord Venkateswara to reunite with her. Their divine marriage took place, after which the Goddess remained at Tiruchanur while the Lord resides atop the Tirumala hills.
Architecturally, the temple showcases Dravidian and Vijayanagara influences, highlighted by a gold-plated sanctum and serene Padmasarovaram temple tank.
