Located in Rameshwaram, Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple is one of India’s holiest pilgrimage sites — uniquely holding the status of both a Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva and a Char Dham destination.
Set on a serene island connected to the mainland by the legendary Pamban Bridge, the temple is world-famous for its breathtaking corridors — the longest temple corridors on Earth — and for its deep connection with the Ramayana.
Here, Shiva is worshipped as Ramanathaswamy, while Goddess Parvati is revered as Parvathavardhini. Pilgrims traditionally begin their journey with a sea bath at Agni Theertham, followed by ritual bathing in 22 sacred wells inside the temple, believed to wash away sins and karmic burdens.
The atmosphere is intense yet peaceful. Every step inside the long stone corridors feels ancient, meditative, and powerful.

History and Spiritual Significance
The Legend of Two Lingams
After defeating Ravana, Lord Rama wished to worship Shiva for atonement. He sent Hanuman to fetch a lingam from the Himalayas, but when Hanuman was delayed, Goddess Sita formed a lingam from sand — called Ramalingam. Later, Hanuman returned with the Vishwalingam (crystal lingam). Rama decreed that Vishwalingam must always be worshipped first — a tradition still followed today.
World’s Longest Temple Corridor
The outer corridor stretches nearly 3,850 feet and contains 1,212 carved pillars, making it the longest temple corridor in the world — a true architectural marvel.
The 22 Sacred Wells
Each well inside the temple has water with different taste and temperature. Devotees believe bathing here purifies the soul and cures ailments.
